Why safari listings all look the same
Search "desert safari Dubai" on any booking platform and you get the same photo forty times: a 4x4 on a dune at sunset. Guests compare price, then reviews, then pick. The platform takes its share either way, and the guest remembers the platform's name, not yours.
How big that share is depends on who you ask, because the big platforms don't publish one rate. A 2026 industry comparison puts Viator at 20–25% base, rising to 30–35% with its Accelerate placement programme, and GetYourGuide at a 30% default, negotiable to 25–28% for operators with volume. The same source lists Google Things to Do at 0%.

The per-group maths
An illustrative family booking; use your own price and contract rate.
| Line | Example |
|---|---|
| Price per adult | AED 300 |
| Group | 4 adults = AED 1,200 |
| OTA commission at 25% | AED 300 |
| OTA commission at 30% | AED 360 |
| Same group booked direct via WhatsApp | AED 1,200 minus card fees |
If 30 groups a month like this one came direct instead, the difference at 25% would be 30 × AED 300 = AED 9,000 a month. The OTA still brings first-time guests from abroad; the goal is to stop paying commission on guests you could have reached yourself. Our car rental project in Sri Lanka moved 40% of bookings direct with zero aggregator fees on those (results on our home page); tours work on the same logic.
Where to win the guest yourself
| Moment | Channel | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Planning the trip | Google Search, Google Things to Do, YouTube | Booking page with clear inclusions; listing on Things to Do via your booking system |
| In the hotel | Concierge, lobby desk | Commission deal with the hotel, printed QR to your WhatsApp |
| In Dubai, deciding today | Google Maps, Instagram | Business Profile with real photos, reviews, "book for tonight" on WhatsApp |
| After the trip | WhatsApp, email | Photos from the trip, review request, referral offer for friends |

Content that sells a safari honestly
A guest who expected a quiet camp and got a crowded one writes the review that costs you next month's bookings. Content that shows the evening as it is protects you:
- The whole evening in one reel: pickup, dune drive, camp, dinner, show, drop-off, with times on screen.
- What's included and what costs extra, said out loud.
- The drivers and guides by name; DET registers safari drivers and vehicles.
- Real guests, with written consent; filming people without consent is an offence under Federal Decree-Law 34 of 2021.
- Private and premium options (small groups, photographers, breakfast safaris) shot separately; they carry the margin.
Our desert photoshoot guide covers shooting conditions and locations.
What nobody tells you
- Your licence is a marketing asset. Khaleej Times reported that DET's safari permit requires 10 owned and registered vehicles, or five plus a 45-seat bus, at least five tour guides, and drivers and guides on the company's visa, with no freelancers. Camps need a separate permit available only to licensed inbound tour operators under Administrative Resolution 39 of 2023. Unlicensed operators can't say that. Put it on your site and profile.
- No shisha or bar in the ad. The media regulations ban advertising smoking of all kinds and alcohol directly or indirectly. A shisha corner in the background of your hero reel is a risk; see our alcohol and shisha rules guide.
- Reviews follow the OTA. Ask every guest for a Google review too, the same way, with no reward; Google bans incentives.
- Creator safaris are ads. A free trip for posts needs the creator's NMA Advertiser Permit.

Vladimir Chernyshev, GM: the dune is free, the system isn't
Opinion. Every operator has the same desert. Pretty sunset drone shots are not a strategy because everyone has them. Operators who grow treat the OTA as one channel and build the rest: Google profile and Things to Do, hotel partnerships, honest content, WhatsApp that books tonight's seats in a minute, and a list of past guests who send their friends. That's how the commission line shrinks.
