First test: search your exact business name
Open Google Maps in a private browser window and type the business name exactly as it appears on the trade licence or signboard. The result tells you which problem you have:
| What you see | What it means | Go to |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing at all, not even with the area name | Profile is unverified, removed or never created | Problems 1 and 2 |
| The profile shows but says "Temporarily closed" or has old details | Someone else controls it, or edits were rejected | Problem 2 |
| The pin sits in the wrong building or the profile was rejected at verification | Address doesn't meet Google's rules | Problem 3 |
| Your name works, but "salon in JLT" shows ten competitors and not you | Visibility is fine; ranking is the issue | Problem 4 |
Most owners who say "we're not on Google Maps" fall into the last row. They tested a category search from home, 20 km away from the shop.

Problem 1: the profile is not verified
Google states it plainly: only verified businesses can show their business info on Maps and Search. A profile you created and never finished verifying stays invisible.
Check the dashboard at business.google.com. If you see "Get verified", complete the method Google offers. In Dubai this is mostly a video recording: the signboard outside, the inside of the premises and proof you manage the business, such as a trade licence or the till. Our Google Business Profile guide covers what the video must show and why videos get rejected.
Google says verification reviews take up to 5 business days and rarely longer. If "Get verified" comes back after you submitted, the review failed: read the "Review issues" notice and record again rather than waiting.
Problem 2: the profile was suspended, disabled or taken over
Google may suspend or disable profiles that break its guidelines. When a profile is removed, the public can't open it. A softer state, which consultants call "disabled", leaves the listing visible but locks you out of editing, as Whitespark explains. Google does not publish a full list of triggers.
The most common causes all come from Google's guidelines for representing your business:
- Keywords in the name. "Best Barber Shop Dubai Marina 24/7" instead of the licensed name. Google says including unnecessary information in the name isn't permitted.
- Two profiles for one business. Often an old one made by a previous manager or agency. Google allows one profile per business per location.
- A phone number you don't control, such as a call-centre or a reseller's number. Google wants a number under the direct control of the business.
How to appeal, according to Google's appeal page:
- Fix the cause first: rename to the licensed name, remove the extra profile, correct the phone.
- Prepare evidence with the same name and address as the profile: trade licence, tax certificate, or a DEWA, du or etisalat bill.
- Submit through the Business Profile appeals tool, signed in to the account that owns the profile.
- Don't create a new profile for the same business. Google says appeals can only be submitted once, so the first one has to be complete.
If a former employee or agency owns the profile, request ownership from the profile's page in Maps rather than creating a duplicate.

Problem 3: your address isn't eligible
This is the Dubai-specific trap. Google's guidelines say virtual offices are ineligible, P.O. boxes are not accepted, and a co-working office needs its own clear signage.
Many free zone licences come with a flexi desk. Meydan Free Zone describes it as renting a chair in a shared co-working area with no fixed desk. That address is valid for the licence. It is not valid for a Google Maps pin, because nothing at that spot carries your sign and customers can't visit you there.
The fix depends on how you work:
| Your setup | What to do on Google |
|---|---|
| Flexi desk, you visit clients (cleaning, AC repair, photography, consulting) | Service-area business with the address hidden, listing the areas you cover |
| Flexi desk, clients come to a home studio or showroom you don't advertise | Service-area business; don't pin the flexi desk |
| Shop, clinic or restaurant with a signboard | Storefront profile at the real address; the pin must match the unit |
| Kiosk or unit inside a mall | Storefront at the mall address with your unit number; the signboard is your proof |
Google limits a service area to about 2 hours of driving from your base. Listing all seven emirates from a Dubai flexi desk breaks that rule.
Problem 4: you're visible but you don't rank
Google ranks local results on three factors: relevance, distance and prominence. Distance is fixed: a person searching from Mirdif will see Mirdif salons first. Relevance and prominence are where you work:
- Primary category. It is the strongest relevance signal you control. "Italian restaurant" beats "Restaurant" for "italian restaurant dubai".
- Services and products filled in with the words customers use.
- Reviews. Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking, and replying to them shows you value feedback.
- Your website. The profile should link to a page about that location, with the same name, address and phone.
Google also says rankings for a new business can take up to a month. Changing categories every few days resets nothing and only adds edits to the review queue.
What nobody tells you
Edits get rejected silently. A changed name or address can go into review and come back as "Not approved" without an email you notice. Google says edits take up to 3 days; check the dashboard after three days instead of assuming they went live.
The listing someone else made is still yours to fix. Customers and Google can create a place for your business. If it is a duplicate, don't claim it and run two: Google allows one profile per location.
Ads don't fix visibility. Google is clear that no one can pay for a better local ranking. Maps ads show only while you pay and are labelled as sponsored.
Vladimir Chernyshev, GM: "Not on Maps" is usually a ranking complaint dressed up as a technical one. Before paying anyone for "Maps SEO", fix the category, fill in the services and set up a routine that asks every happy customer for a review. Those three cost nothing.
