Yacht photoshoot in Dubai: from AED 379 an hour, but the sunset slot sets the real price

Motor yachts moored in Dubai Marina

A private yacht for a photoshoot in Dubai starts at AED 379 an hour for a 33 ft boat and runs to AED 10,000 an hour and more for a superyacht, with a 2-hour minimum on most hulls. The catch is the sunset slot: several operators require 3 hours on Friday and Saturday evenings, so a 'from AED 850 an hour' boat becomes AED 2,550 before extras. A personal shoot needs only a licensed charter; a brand shoot also needs the city filming permit.

What a yacht shoot costs: the boat, by size

Dubai charters are priced per hour for the whole boat, captain and crew included. The published starting rates fall into four bands. They are operators' asking prices, not market statistics, and every one of them confirms the final figure in a written quote.

Packaged "yacht photoshoots" exist too. Skywalker lists a 2–3 hour session on a superyacht from Dubai Harbour at AED 2,000 and says its packages usually start from AED 2,000 per hour; the price moves with edited images, video and commercial use.

The worked number: why "from AED 850" becomes AED 2,550

Take a 52 ft yacht that Marinova lists from AED 850 an hour. Its minimum is 2 hours, except Friday and Saturday sunset, when it is 3 hours.

ScenarioHoursBoat cost
Tuesday morning, 2 h2 × 850AED 1,700
Tuesday sunset, 2 h2 × 850AED 1,700
Saturday sunset, 3 h minimum3 × 850AED 2,550

That is before VAT. Some operators quote excluding VAT, others mark VAT-inclusive rates separately, so ask which one you are reading. Then add the photographer. If golden hour matters and your dates are flexible, a weekday sunset gives you the same light for two-thirds of the weekend price.

When to sail: golden hour by season

Golden hour on the water is short and moves a lot over the year. Sunset in Dubai falls at 17:28 on 1 December and 19:04 on 1 June, so a slot that worked in winter is 90 minutes too early in summer.

Our rule of thumb: leave the berth 75–90 minutes before sunset. The first 30 minutes go to the Marina canal while the towers still take side light; the open water near Bluewaters, Atlantis or the Burj Al Arab gets the last 45 minutes. A standard 3-hour route runs Dubai Marina → JBR → Bluewaters → Atlantis → Burj Al Arab and back, so on a 2-hour booking you will not reach the Burj Al Arab in good light.

Summer evenings bring heat and haze on top of the late sunset. If you shoot between June and September, read our summer heat guide first.

Rules: licensed charter, IDs, permits

The yacht. Under Dubai Law No. 11 of 2010, every vessel must be licensed and registered with the Dubai Maritime Authority, and nobody may charter boats without its licence. Since 2025 a separate resolution on commercial maritime activities adds a permit for each vessel used commercially. Book through an operator that states its licence; a private owner renting out his boat by DM is outside this system.

Guests' IDs. Expect to send an Emirates ID or passport copy for the lead guest and often for everyone on board before departure, as Condé Nast Traveller Middle East reports. The same piece notes a typical 50% deposit.

The shoot. Personal photos on a charter need nothing more. A shoot that promotes a business, paid or barter, is commercial: it needs the city filming permit at AED 520 per application, and production agencies list the Coast Guard among the approvals for anything on the water. Our Dubai filming permit guide walks through the process. If a creator posts the result as an ad, they also need an Advertiser Permit.

The drone. A drone over the Palm or the Marina is not a "just add it" extra. Registration, flight permission and no-fly zones are covered in our drone filming guide.

What nobody tells you about yacht shoots

  • The photographer takes a seat. Every person counts toward the hull's licensed capacity. A 55 ft yacht can be licensed for 8 guests, and operators ask you to declare photographers and equipment in advance. Six friends plus a photographer and an assistant already fill it.
  • Moving boats blur. On open water the deck rolls; long lenses and slow shutter speeds suffer. Ask the captain to hold position or idle in the lee of Bluewaters or the Palm for portraits, and shoot the wide "cruising" frames while moving.
  • White decks and white skies. Midday glare off a white deck burns highlights and makes squinting faces. Before golden hour, shoot under the flybridge shade.
  • The sea route is fixed by time, not wish. Ask the operator which landmark you will reach at which minute; it is a captain's call, not yours, once you are out.
  • Wardrobe changes need a cabin. Small 33–44 ft boats may have none. If you plan three looks, check cabins on the listing; gCar lists cabin counts for each yacht.

A shot list for a 2-hour sunset charter

  1. Boarding and walk along the deck in the Marina canal (side light, towers behind).
  2. Bow portraits at JBR with the Ain Dubai wheel in the background.
  3. Lounge and detail shots: glasses, hands, fabric, while the yacht runs to Bluewaters.
  4. Golden-hour portraits with the yacht holding position.
  5. Ten minutes of blue hour on the way back: lit skyline, the brightest frames of the day.

Questions people ask

How much is a yacht photoshoot in Dubai?

AED 379 an hour and up for the boat alone, per one operator's published list, with a 2-hour minimum on most yachts. A mid-size 50–55 ft yacht starts around AED 700–900 an hour. Add the photographer, and on Friday or Saturday evenings expect a 3-hour minimum at sunset.

Do I need a permit for a yacht photoshoot?

No, not for personal photos on a licensed charter. Yes, if the photos or video promote a business: then the city filming permit applies (AED 520 per application), and agencies report Coast Guard coordination for shoots on the water.

Can I fly a drone from the yacht?

Not without approvals. Drones in Dubai need registration and flight permission, and much of the coast near the Palm, Burj Al Arab and the airports is restricted. Check our drone guide before you pack one.

Does the photographer count as a guest?

Yes. Every person on board counts toward the yacht's licensed capacity, and operators ask you to declare photographers, videographers and equipment in advance. Small 33–44 ft yachts are licensed for 6–10 people.

What time should the yacht leave for golden hour?

About 75–90 minutes before sunset. That is around 16:00 in December, when the sun sets at 17:28, and around 17:30 in June, when it sets at 19:04.
